Bicycling magazine's Editors' Choice.

The Terry Bella Short is known as one of the best cycling shorts available to women. Universally loved for its style, fit and all-day comfort, the Bella has all the best features, Terry's Flex Air Chamois and just the right level of compression. Choose Bella if you want the best bike short made for women, ride frequently and aggressively, and like to support products constructed in the USA. But don't just take our word for it – here's what the editors at Bicycling have to say:

"Our female testers had a tough decision to make, but ultimately voted the Bella Short their fave for features such as its distinctive hot-pink perforated chamois, which delivered on its promise for increased comfort and breathability by wicking away moisture so riders didn't feel like 'I'd wet my shorts after a ride'. They nylon/spandex fabric felt slick and fast, with dark pink or gray stitching that provided just the right amount of flair. The nonelastic front waist should be the standard for shorts: it gives a biblike feel without the hassle of straps or the bathroom antics of bibs. Also, the fit is good as it always is with Terry and the silicone grippers were itch free."

Proudly designed and sewn in the USA at a green energy-certified facility, supporting local jobs and the highest standards in quality and fit.

Chamois
Flex Air Chamois:
Unique to Terry, the Flex Air offers the best shape and construction for women. Seamless chamois with 4-way stretch Elastic Interface Technology provides freedom of movement on the saddle; multi-level foam padding is perforated for increased breathability; light, channeled microfiber fabric in Terry pink is antimicrobial and enhances moisture transfer; soft wing construction reduces bulk at inner thigh to avoid chafing. Made in Italy.

product care
Remove your shorts and launder asap for best results as residual sweat may damage the chamois. Wash only in delicate cycle at 86 degrees. Use neutral non-aggressive detergents, keep like colors together and avoid dryers. If you use chamois butter/cream, your garment's ability to wick moisture will be greatly reduced and the durability of your chamois may be compromised. Note: we recommend that you wash new bottoms prior to use.

Reviews

The cushioning was a bit

"The cushioning was a bit thin - we only rode for two hours and I was not comfortable at the end. I don't think I would be comfortable on a longer ride. The bottom of the legs were a bit tight on me - I am a lean but muscular woman, and they squeezed my lower thighs."

— Christine T. (3/5)

Great bike shorts

"Love these bike shorts. The fit is great, they don’t ride up my legs, just the right compression, love the waist band too. Used for short and long distance rides."

— Cheryl Y. (5/5)

Great quality and fit. As

"Great quality and fit. As an XS rider I struggle to find cycling shorts that fit. These ones were great. They seat higher over the hip bones. All around a good quality pair of shorts."

— Susana K. (5/5)

With multiple choices sizing and chamois, need better return policy

"I have been trying to find the Goldilocks of cycling shorts. I was attracted to Terry's "Ride it. Wear it. Love it or Return it. " guarantee--one they have actually trademarked. I thought that meant I could try their shorts and if after a few rides they did not work out, I could return or exchange them. HOWEVER, I found out by reading the fine print that the returns have to be in "new or salable condition. " I assume that wearing as appropriate for a few rides--no underwear, most likely using chamois cream--would render the shorts not salable. So I tried them out on my triathlon bike outdoors with underwear underneath them and the tags on. I decided that the chafing I was getting was from the underwear, not the shorts, so cut the tags off, washed the shorts, and wore for my next outdoor ride. After washing, they were very difficult to get on--very tight. Once I got them on, they seemed comfortable enough during an hour bike ride. I did not have the issue with seams chafing me like some of my other shorts. The material feels kind of cheap, given the price, and caught on my seat as I moved from aero to more upright position. The chamois still feels too thick to me so I had planned on trying the minimalist chamois, but hesitate because I feel like the only way to properly test the shorts is to actually ride them and wear them a few times but I don't know if I want to risk not being able to return them if they don't fit. I don't know if I should get a larger size or try a looser fit. I also don't know how they will hold up on the longer rides I bought them for. Low score because I am not happy that I spent this much money for something I am not confident is the right fit for me and I feel like the return policy is misleading."

— Jennifer R. (3/5)

A+ for comfort, but women want pockets!

"Comparing these to the Bermuda shorts - I like the chamois better, less “diaper” feel. The comfort on 20+ mile rides is superior to the Bermuda. There is more compression but I don’t feel squished and the legs don’t pinch. But for the premium price point, we definitely need a pocket."

— Jeri (4/5)

Perfect shorts

"Did a ride in my new shorts today and they were perfect. Very comfy. Got a size large because my old mediums were getting too snug. 😳 I’m 66 yo, 5’8” and probs 140lbs."

— Stephanie H. (5/5)

Perfect shorts!

"Size small, 112 lbs. perfect fit. No riding up. Waist is comfortable."

— C L. (5/5)

I have worn Bella shorts

"I have worn Bella shorts for years. They are the best fitting bike shorts that provide just the right amount of cushion for any distance I ride."

— Mary F. (5/5)

Biking shorts

"I took my biking shorts for a ride and 25 mile of comfort happened. Very satisfied. The inner pad is just the right thickness. Thank you"

— Katarina K. (5/5)

Material too Thin

"I returned these because the material felt thin and flimsy. I had doubts whether they would hold up"

— Christiane S. (2/5)

Q&A

Questions & Answers

The Bella Bike Short suits women who ride frequently and want more chamois support than a fitness short delivers on moderate-to-long road rides. Built around Terry's Flex Air Chamois with multi-level foam padding and designed with Terry's women-specific fit philosophy, it earns its place when saddle comfort on longer or harder efforts becomes something you want to solve directly. Bicycling magazine named it an Editors' Choice. If your rides are shorter and casual, a lighter fitness short may serve you better.

Yes, the Bella Bike Short is compression-forward. Its French nylon and spandex fabric carries a high level of compression that aids muscle support and recovery on longer or more aggressive rides. That means it holds the leg firmly rather than offering a loose, barely-there feel. If you want firm support when you're pushing hard or going long, that compression works in your favor. If you prefer a soft, minimally compressive sensation, the Bella Bike Short will feel tighter than you want.

Probably not. The Bella Bike Short is deliberately compression-forward, with French nylon and spandex fabric that delivers a high level of compression for muscle support and recovery. Riders who want a soft, relaxed, minimally compressive feel tend to find it tighter than they'd like. If most of your riding is casual or everyday, Terry's Actif Bike Short offers a more relaxed fitness-short feel. The Bella rewards riders who specifically want that firm, supportive hold on longer or harder efforts.

The Bella Bike Short steps up from a fitness short in two ways that matter on longer rides. Its Flex Air Chamois uses multi-level, perforated foam padding and seamless 4-way stretch Elastic Interface Technology, giving more cushioning and breathability than typical fitness-short inserts. It also adds a high level of compression for muscle support and recovery. Fitness shorts prioritize casual comfort and lighter support. Riders who have outgrown a fitness short because rides are getting longer or harder tend to find the Bella addresses that gap.

The Bella Bike Short is well matched to moderate-to-long rides, thanks to its Flex Air Chamois, 8.5-inch inseam, and sculpted 6-panel fit built for pedaling comfort, plus high-compression fabric that aids muscle support and recovery for longer distances. Bicycling named it an Editors' Choice. If your rides stretch into all-day or long-haul distance, the Bella Max Bike Short or Long Haul Bike Short are built for that extra endurance support.

The decision comes down to distance. The Bella Bike Short is built for moderate-to-long road rides with a well-padded Flex Air Chamois and a high level of compression. If your riding has moved into all-day or multi-hour endurance territory, your need has shifted toward maximum long-haul comfort, and the Bella Max Bike Short or Long Haul Bike Short are designed specifically for that. Choose the Bella when longer road rides are your sweet spot; step up when all-day distance becomes the norm.

The Bella Bike Short is designed to resist chafing and binding, which matters for sensitive riders. It uses flat seam construction, a soft-wing chamois that reduces bulk at the inner thigh, and a contoured waistband with an elastic-free front yoke so nothing digs in at the waist. A Terry-branded silicone leg gripper holds the short in place while pedaling, and Bicycling testers specifically praised those grippers as itch-free. Together these details support comfort across moderate-to-long rides.

The Bella Bike Short is optimized for road riding, with its Flex Air Chamois, 6-panel pedaling fit, and compression tuned for longer or more aggressive paved efforts. If most of your riding is gravel or mixed terrain, your needs shift toward terrain-specific construction, and Terry's Gravel Bike Short or Breakaway Bike Short are built with that context in mind. Choose the Bella when your rides are primarily on the road; look to a gravel-focused option when the surface gets rougher and more varied.

The Bella Bike Short uses a contoured waistband with an elastic-free front yoke, a feature Bicycling testers called something that should be the standard for shorts. It gives a bib-like feel at the waist without the straps or bathroom hassle of actual bibs, meaning no pinching or binding band across your stomach when you're bent forward on the bike. For chafing-sensitive riders, this matters because it removes a common pressure point during longer stretches in the saddle.

The Bella Bike Short manages heat through its chamois design. The Flex Air Chamois uses perforated, multi-level foam for ventilation and a light, channeled microfiber fabric that is antimicrobial and enhances moisture transfer. Bicycling testers noted the chamois wicked moisture well, so riders didn't feel damp after a ride. For warmer conditions or harder efforts where heat builds up in the saddle area, these breathability features help keep the Bella comfortable through moderate-to-long rides.
