product care
Remove your tights and launder asap for best results as residual sweat may damage the chamois. Wash only in delicate cycle at 86 degrees. Use neutral non-aggressive detergents, keep like colors together and avoid dryers. If you use chamois butter/cream, your garment's ability to wick moisture will be greatly reduced and the durability of your chamois may be compromised. Note: we recommend that you wash new bottoms prior to use.

Fleece I padded wind pants

"Just what I was looking for to wear over bike shorts in cold weather. Keeps my legs warm without feeling hot. Smart wool does its job of wicking. Never feel sweaty. The wind feature on front actually keeps cold wind from coming through. Love these pants."

Q&A

Questions & Answers

The Active Fleece Unpadded Wind Pant, made by Smartwool, is padless — it has no chamois. It's designed to layer over cycling shorts that already provide your padding, or to be worn solo for comfort off the bike. If you plan to ride in it for any real distance, wear your own padded cycling shorts underneath. Riders who want a chamois built into a single cool-weather garment should look instead at Terry's Thermal Bike Tight or Winter Bike Tight, which include padding so no layering is needed.

The Active Fleece Unpadded Wind Pant from Smartwool is wind- and water-resistant, not fully waterproof. A windproof front panel paired with a non-PFC DWR finish shields against wind chill and light moisture, which handles damp or blustery shoulder-season rides well. For sustained rain, though, it won't keep you dry. Riders who regularly ride through wet conditions and need full waterproofing should consider the Lupra GORE-TEX Bike Pant, which is built as a genuine rain pant for mixed wet and cold weather.

The Active Fleece Unpadded Wind Pant, made by Smartwool, is best for riders who already own cycling shorts they love and want a cool-weather outer layer to add warmth and wind protection. Its windproof front panel and soft brushed merino interior make it a strong layering piece for cool and cold shoulder-season rides. The 28-inch inseam gives full leg coverage, and the high-rise waist with exterior drawcord lets you dial in the fit. It suits riders building an adaptable layering system rather than those wanting a single all-in-one tight.

Yes. The Active Fleece Unpadded Wind Pant from Smartwool is comfortable worn solo thanks to its soft brushed merino wool interior next to skin. The high-rise waist and exterior drawcord help it sit well as a standalone pant, making it versatile for errands, travel, or cool-weather wear beyond cycling. Keep in mind it has no chamois, so for extended time on the bike you'll want padded cycling shorts underneath. Its merino versatility is what lets it cross between a layering piece and everyday comfort.

The Active Fleece Unpadded Wind Pant, made by Smartwool, is a cooler-weather layering piece. Its brushed merino interior and fleece construction add warmth, while the windproof front panel blocks wind chill — a combination suited to cool and cold shoulder-season riding rather than warm days. If temperatures are mild enough that you'd rather ride in shorts, this pant is more coverage than you need; a Terry option like the Chill Bike Short 2.0 would serve warm-weather riding better. For genuinely sub-zero conditions, a dedicated winter layer makes more sense.

Choose a padded tight over the Active Fleece Unpadded Wind Pant, made by Smartwool, when you'd rather not layer shorts and a pant together. Because this pant is padless, your on-bike comfort depends entirely on padded shorts worn underneath. If you want one cool-weather garment with the chamois already built in, Terry's Thermal Bike Tight or Winter Bike Tight is the simpler solution. The Active Fleece Unpadded Wind Pant earns its place when you already own chamois shorts you trust and want a versatile outer layer over them.

The Active Fleece Unpadded Wind Pant, made by Smartwool, offers full-length leg coverage with a 28-inch inseam, placing it in the 9-inch-plus length category. A high-rise waist keeps it secure and covered when you're bent forward on the bike, and an exterior waist drawcord lets you fine-tune the fit — useful when you're layering it over shorts of varying thickness. This adjustability matters because it keeps the pant from shifting as an outer layer while staying comfortable enough to wear solo.
