"Our testers raved about the unobtrusive chamois, pajama-soft fabric, and non-binding waist and leg openings, which stayed in place without pulling or squeezing our legs as we pedaled. We also appreciated that Terry, a perennial Editors' Choice finalist, makes the Breakaway in the United States."

product care
Remove your shorts and launder asap for best results as residual sweat may damage the chamois. Wash only in delicate cycle at 86 degrees. Use neutral non-aggressive detergents, keep like colors together and avoid dryers. If you use chamois butter/cream, your garment's ability to wick moisture will be greatly reduced and the durability of your chamois may be compromised. Note: we recommend that you wash new bottoms prior to use.

Reviews

Soft and low compression

"Did not work for me personally, but I used Terry’s return policy to exchange it for the more compressive and structured Bella. I did love how buttery soft the material was, felt like I wasn’t wearing anything at all! I am 5’4”, 160lbs, muscular and the medium fits perfectly"

Terry Breakaway shorts!

"I’ve had 2 rides in my Breakaway shorts, and I love them! No break in needed. I have owned many pairs of Terry shorts, and they last forever! Quality shorts for sure. I ride about 8,000 miles a year, and they are the ones I pick for the longest rides."

— Cindy D. (5/5)

I wish they used softer fabric

"I purchase a new bike short for my 20 miles a week ride every 2 years or so. The fabric has changed significantly in the past few years . No longer soft but sort of plastic feeling. My older pair has faded and stretched a bit, but is still soft and buttery next to my skin. I miss that fabric!"

— Rebecca O. (3/5)

Repeat purchase

"I love these shorts. They're so comfortable in the saddle and keep my nether regions happy. It has just the right amount of compression. This is my 3rd pair. I was tired of having to settle for my "other" bike shorts when I ran out of clean ones, so I bought the 3rd pair which should help me get to the next laundry day without having to resort to my other inferior options."

— Lisa K. (5/5)

Thank you, Terry - great customer service!

"Last month I wrote an unfavorable review for the gray Breakaway bike shorts due to the fabric darkening around the crotch area when wet with sweat. Terry responded to my review to let me know that I could return the shorts even though I had worn them. Because I love the Breakaway bike shorts overall but did not like the way the gray color darkened with sweat, instead of simply returning the gray shorts I exchanged them for the same shorts in black. The black color does not show sweat like the gray does. Thank you, Terry, for informing me of your great return policy, and for making the shorts exchange process easy. I have already worn my new black Breakaway shorts twice!"

— Andrea M. (5/5)

Gray breakaway short

"I wore them for the first time today on a ride, and discovered that the fabric held my sweat around the chamois/crotch area , making it look like I had wet my pants. These shorts are otherwise great, but the gray color has this fatal flaw so I will not be wearing them again."

— Andrea M. (1/5)

best ever

"The Breakaway shorts have been my favorite for more than a decade! You cannot beat these for comfort on short and moderate rides. (10-25miles is our usual). I just tried the Bella short because of a sale with a great price and they do not make me at all happy. I will never stray from Breakaway. . . again!"

— Amy P. (5/5)

Thin padding and fabric is sheer

"The fabric is so thin it is sheer!! And the padding is way too thin"

— Sital S. (1/5)

For leisure rides not long rides

"I was looking for another bike short in a different color that was not black. The breakaway bike short is ok for shorter rides, chamois is not as padded as Bella short. I would not use for really long rides."

— Adalia E. (3/5)

Better for yoga than cycling

"Comfortable chamois but the lack of elastic or silicon grips on the legs or waist felt more gimmicky than practical. I experienced lots of sliding, rolling and shifting in the legs and waist while riding. I’ll replace with a more traditional short."

Q&A

Questions & Answers

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short is not a compression short. Its compression is minimal by design, built from soft, pajama-like nylon and spandex that feels non-binding rather than snug. It suits riders who want a comfort-forward feel over tight muscle support. If most of your riding calls for firm compression or muscle support, Terry's Power Bike Short delivers that snug, supportive sensation instead. The Breakaway earns its place when you prioritize softness and all-day ease over the held-in feel of compression fabric.

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short is a strong fit for riders stepping up from a fitness short who want more chamois padding for longer or more frequent rides. Its well-padded Fleet Air Chamois with multi-level perforated foam supports more time in the saddle, while the soft, minimally compressive fabric keeps things comfortable. It's especially good for women who dislike compression or elastic gripper bands. The Breakaway reflects Terry's decades of designing around women's comfort, making it a natural second or third cycling short purchase.

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short uses the more padded Fleet Air Chamois, a seamless design with 4-way stretch Elastic Interface Technology and multi-level foam padding, perforated for ventilation. This gives it noticeably more cushioning than a typical fitness short, which is why riders moving to longer or harder rides tend to appreciate it. The soft-wing construction reduces bulk at the inner thigh to prevent chafing over distance. Testers described the chamois as unobtrusive, so the added padding doesn't come at the cost of comfort.

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short is designed specifically to avoid that. Both the 2-inch waistband and the self-fabric leg bands are entirely elastic-free, so there's no gripper elastic pressing into your skin. Testers noted they stayed in place without pulling or squeezing while pedaling. This makes the Breakaway a good match for women who find traditional elastic bands binding or who get pressure marks and irritation. Combined with flat seam construction, it's built to minimize pressure points across the whole garment.

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short handles moderate to longer rides well, thanks to its well-padded Fleet Air Chamois and chafe-reducing flat seam and soft-wing construction. That said, it isn't Terry's dedicated maximum-endurance option. If your riding regularly stretches into all-day or multi-day touring where you need the most endurance-focused support, the Long Haul Bike Short or Bella Max Bike Short are built specifically for that level of sustained comfort. For most longer weekend and endurance rides, the Breakaway holds its own.

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short manages heat through a few features working together. The Fleet Air Chamois foam is perforated for ventilation and breathability, and it's wrapped in light, smooth microfiber fabric. The outer nylon and spandex fabric is soft and breathable as well. For riders worried about heat buildup around the saddle on warmer days, these details help air move and keep the chamois from trapping heat, which matters most as rides get longer and temperatures climb.

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short is primarily a road-oriented performance short, comfortable across moderate to longer rides. If most of your riding is gravel or mixed terrain, the Gravel Bike Short is purpose-built for those conditions and will serve you better. Choose the Breakaway when your riding leans toward road and you value its soft, non-binding fabric and well-padded Fleet Air Chamois. Matching the short to your primary terrain tends to make the biggest difference in long-term comfort.

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short makes sense when your rides are getting longer or more frequent and you want more chamois support than a casual short provides. Its well-padded Fleet Air Chamois and chafe-reducing construction are built for more time in the saddle. If your riding is mostly casual and recreational, the Actif Bike Short, a fitness short, may be a better everyday match. The Breakaway is the step up when saddle comfort over distance becomes something you actively want to solve.

The Terry Breakaway Bike Short is a standard mid-length short with an 8.5-inch inseam, placing it in the 7-to-8-inch length category. This offers moderate leg coverage that suits most riders without feeling long or short. The self-fabric, elastic-free leg bands sit comfortably against the leg without digging in. If you're comparing coverage, this is a middle-of-the-road length, which is why it works for a wide range of body types and riding styles.
