product care
Remove your shorts and launder asap for best results as residual sweat may damage the chamois. Wash only in delicate cycle at 86 degrees. Use neutral non-aggressive detergents, keep like colors together and avoid dryers. If you use chamois butter/cream, your garment's ability to wick moisture will be greatly reduced and the durability of your chamois may be compromised. Note: we recommend that you wash new bottoms prior to use.

Reviews

I like everything about this

"I like everything about this short: material, rise, leg length and lightweight chamois. Too bad it's being discontinued. I got 3 pairs to tide me over."

— Annie F. (5/5)

Hoy flash bike shorts

"I bought these for Ragbrai. I have tested them out mountain biking and on a 65 mile ride right out of the bag! They are great. Comfortable, did not chafe and covered more of my leg from the sun than some of the shorter bike shorts. I will buy another pair!"

— Janine M. (5/5)

Still comfy after 35 miles

"I’m hoping they’ll still be as comfortable once I get up to 50 miles"

— Tracy W. (5/5)

Too Long and Legs Baggy

"Just didn't like the longer legs, as they were almost baggy in the gray fabric area and overall way too long for my petite frame. Back to the Touring shorts!"

— Sarah S. (3/5)

Comfy

"Shorts fit well and are very comfortable."

— Dianne R. (4/5)

Light Weight

"am a road bike rider in my late 60s and live in the SF Bay area. Have used these shorts twice, once inside and the second time, outside, on a hot day, for a 30 mile ride. very nice light fabric, and really like the lack of grabbers on the legs and the double fabric there. did not ride up on my legs. recommend them!!"

— Elizabeth (5/5)

Nice cycling shorts for hot conditions

"This summer has been unusually hot in many places. So, I wanted to get some light road cycling shorst. This is a lovely short in all respects, but the sizing is off. I am usually a small in cycling bottoms, and a small in Terry cycling bottoms. Occasionally, I have been a medium. So, I ordered the small but just in case also ordered the medium . Shorts arrived. I could get the small on but it was snug and uncomfortable . I think it runs small. Put the medium on, and that one fit me better. You may want or need to size up one size for this short depending on how you like your shorts to fit. I gave it 4 stars only because of the size issue. As between this short and the Rebel short (also for hot weather), I prefer the Rebel short."

— Marisa (4/5)

Perfect summer riding shorts

"5'2' 100lbs ordered size small and fit is perfect. Usually I'm ready to immediately change out of riding shorts and these are so comfortable I'm no longer in a rush to change"

— Mary B. (5/5)

Good short but not my favorite in the heat

"I have become a convert to Terry shorts after many years of riding! The fit and cushion is fantastic. I decided to try the Hot Flash short because I live in the desert and the summers are brutal. This short has panels that allow better ventilation but the tradeoff is less grip at the bottom. Overall, they ride cool but since they ride up the shorter length doesn't provide as much sun protection for my thighs. I prefer the Chill 9 (since I'm 6' tall) for this time of year. Still a great short. I wear the Hot Flash for shorter rides and the Chill 9 for longer rides in the heat."

— Linda S. (4/5)

Love the fit and lightweight chamois

"I regularly wear the Chill short and was happy to see Terry make another short with the Flex Air Lite chamois. The Hot Flash short - I chuckle about the name - is another stellar, breathable short where a higher waist and leg bands stay in place. Gotta love the two-tone color!"

Q&A

Questions & Answers

The Hot Flash Bike Short is built specifically for riders in the hottest, most humid climates. It uses Brrr cooling nylon and spandex body fabric, breathable textured mesh paneling, and a Flex Air Lite chamois perforated for maximum ventilation. It's the lightest weight short Terry has ever made, so heat and airflow drive every design choice. If summer rides leave you overheated in standard shorts, the Hot Flash Bike Short is Terry's most heat-focused Performance Short and keeps you cooler when temperatures climb.

The Hot Flash Bike Short is rated Minimal for compression, which is a deliberate trade-off. To keep the fabric as light and cooling as possible, Terry omitted the firm, held-in feel of a traditional Performance Short. Riders who want muscle support or a snug, firmly compressive fit should know this up front. If compression matters to how your legs feel on a ride, the Power Bike Short or Cyclone Bike Short deliver that firmer support while the Hot Flash Bike Short prioritizes airflow and a light, non-restrictive feel.

The Hot Flash Bike Short uses Terry's Flex Air Lite chamois, a seamless design with 4-way stretch Elastic Interface Technology and signature soft-wing construction that reduces bulk at the inner thigh to limit chafing. Its foam is perforated and set at a slightly reduced density to prioritize breathability over maximum cushioning. This is a breathability-first chamois tuned for heat. It offers solid Performance-grade support for moderate to longer warm-weather rides, but it isn't built around deep, long-haul padding.

The Hot Flash Bike Short is comfortable for moderate to longer warm-weather rides, but it's a heat-first short rather than an endurance-first one. Its Flex Air Lite chamois uses slightly reduced foam density to maximize ventilation, which means it doesn't deliver the deep cushioning dedicated long-haul riders rely on. If most of your riding is maximum endurance or back-to-back big days, the Bella Max Bike Short or Long Haul Bike Short provide higher-density, long-haul chamois cushioning better suited to those distances.

The Hot Flash Bike Short earns its place in hot, humid weather for riders who prioritize cooling and a light, non-restrictive feel. It's less ideal if you want firm compression and muscle support, in which case the Power Bike Short or Cyclone Bike Short fit better. Riders needing maximum long-haul chamois cushioning tend to prefer the Bella Max Bike Short, and those doing multi-day touring are better served by the Touring Bike Short. It's also not built for cool or cold weather riding.

Even with its minimal compression, the Hot Flash Bike Short uses thoughtful fit construction to stay comfortable. A sculpted multi-panel dual-fabric design, a wide 2.5 inch comfort waistband, and 2-layer foldover panels at the leg openings create a non-binding finish, while flat seam construction prevents chafing. The Flex Air Lite chamois adds seamless soft-wing construction that reduces bulk at the inner thigh. Together these details, grounded in Terry's long experience designing for women cyclists, deliver a chafe-conscious, secure feel without relying on tight compression.

The Hot Flash Bike Short is a waistband short designed around maximum cooling for hot, humid rides. If you tend to prefer bib construction for longer rides, because a bib removes the waistband and keeps everything in place, the Madame X Bib Short is the Performance Short to consider. The choice comes down to what feels best on your body over distance. Many riders who run hot still prefer the Hot Flash Bike Short's ultralight waistband design, so it's worth weighing cooling priority against bib preference.

The Hot Flash Bike Short has an 8.25 inch inseam, placing it in the 7 to 8 inch length category, which is standard mid-length coverage for Terry's Performance Short line. The leg openings use 2-layer foldover panels for a non-binding finish that stays put without digging in. This length offers balanced coverage that works well across a range of rides, so coverage is rarely the deciding factor with the Hot Flash Bike Short. Its defining strength remains cooling for hot, humid conditions.
